Chances are, at some point you’ve been invited to a Baby Shower or two, or at the very least, needed to buy a baby gift for someone you know. Often times the parents-to-be will have created a baby registry at a retailer or Amazon Baby Registry which makes things super easy when you really aren’t sure what to get or what they need. However recently I was invited to a friend’s Baby Shower and she was registered at Babies R Us. Once I got to the store and printed the registry out, I saw that most of the items were already purchased so I went to my “go-to” baby gift which is the Cloud b Sleep Sheep. This was an absolute life saver in getting both my kids to sleep during their first year (as I mentioned in my post about How to Get Your Baby to Sleep) so I knew she would most likely love it just as much. It wasn’t on the registry so I felt like it would be an unexpected but lovely gift for her new baby girl. Boy was I wrong! When it came time to gift opening at the shower, it quickly became apparent to me that my idea was not as unique as I thought it was. Of all the gifts she opened, about 10 of them were the Cloud b Sleep Sheep. By the end she owned an entire flock of them. Talk about counting sheep! (Thank goodness for gift receipts).
I laughed, chalked this one up as a learning experience and took time to reflect on some of the best gifts I had received when I had my babies on the car ride home. Why didn’t I go that route? It would have likely saved me from the disappointment, not to mention, saved the new mom from making a trip to the store to return the gift (along with the rest of the flock). So, to help save others from the same situation, I’ve rounded up the Top 10 Best & Unique Baby Gift Ideas that are sure to please and make life a little easier for new parents (not to mention easy on the wallet).
The Top 10 Best Unique & Practical Baby Gift Ideas
No Joke, I received this as a Baby Shower gift with my daughter. At first I did think it was a joke when I opened it. It turned out to be one of the most useful gifts I received! Her nursery didn’t have one and it didn’t even dawn on me that having the ability to dim the lights at 2 am feedings would be a godsend. What a bright idea!
I know diapers & wipes sound like a bit of a no-brainer but you really can’t go wrong. When I had my son, my in-laws threw me a shower for people to come by and meet the baby but they had to bring diapers and/or wipes in lieu of a gift. We didn’t have to buy diapers or wipes until he was 6 months old! It was such a blessing and we were so grateful. They’re not cheap and being on maternity leave on a reduced income, it was nice to get a delay on that added monthly expense. Now it’s so easy to buy diapers as Amazon offers monthly subscriptions! What a gift in itself to not have to leave your house to buy them! I received a wipes warmer as a gift with my daughter and it’s been so nice to have! It makes the wipes nice and warm so they’re not so cold on little bums! Helpful Hint: My Go-To Combo is Pampers diapers and Huggies wipes!
- Anyone who uses bottles with their baby knows the pain of having to wash and sterilize bottle parts. Let’s be honest: it’s a huge pain in the a$s. I know of many sleep deprived parents who accidentally left the pot boiling too long and melted the bottles, nearly starting a fire! It’s happened to the best of us, trust me! When my daughter was a baby I received the Avent Microwave Bottle Sterilizer and it was a game changer. Just add water, add bottles and microwave for 3-4 minutes. Easy peasy.
- While we’re on the topic of bottles, when they come out of the steamer, they’ll still be wet and need to dry off but where do you put them? For a while with my son we were laying them out on towels on the kitchen counter but that got real annoying real fast. We now had zero counter space and a cluttered looking mess constantly which was not sustainable So I picked up this inexpensive bottle drying rack which we could easily store in the pantry out of plain sight. It came in extra handy when the sterilizing days were over (around 3-4 months) and we were just hand washing.
Real Talk: handwashing reeks of effort. So this Dishwasher basket made bottle washing a dream. The small parts fit nicely inside the basket and is placed beside the main bottle part in the top rack of your dishwasher. It was also perfect for soothers and dishwasher safe teething toys.
This is often seen on Baby Shower registries but it is SO useful. It’s a dirty diaper receptacle that keeps the odor contained as well. The Munchkin brand ones are awesome because for every diaper pail sold, Munchkin will plant a tree! How cool is that?! The refills are such a great gift that saves parents from having to buy them on their own. And believe me, they will go through a lot of them!
This one is useful for when babies start to eat solids but they’re awesome for containing messes! They catch everything and don’t absorb moisture so baby’s clothes are clean and dry underneath. A game changer for parents of messy eaters everywhere.
This is the answer for every teething baby who’s ever chewed on its hand. It’s a mitt made of soft silicone that fits securely on little hands so it won’t constantly be thrown or dropped on the ground. It was such a sweet gift and our little guy loved it!
Laundry is a necessary evil and babies tend to have sensitive skin. Baby detergent can be pricey so what a great practical gift to give new parents! Pair it with a cute hamper or laundry basket to create a cute little package. Added Bonus: The combo of Ivory Snow & Snuggle softener is an amazing smell like no other. (If anyone needs me I’ll be over here smelling my son’s freshly washed laundry).
I received a thermometer as a gift with my daughter but it was the kind that went in the ear. It was on my registry so I was completely happy with the gift, however at about 9 months of age she started to get chronic ear infections (later needing surgery). Needless to say, trying to get a thermometer in her already painful ears was not a happy experience. In hindsight, a forehead thermometer would have been a much better choice! I also recently received Fever Bugz as a gift and they are the coolest thing! They stick on their foreheads all day and display your child’s temperature. Both amazing gifts.
If you have a baby gift to buy or even are looking for ideas for your own registry, I hope this list has been helpful to you! There are so many amazing baby items out there but these are some of my most useful favourites.
