One thing I love about living in Canada is the changing of the seasons. The way the leaves turn from green to beautiful bright yellows, oranges and reds at the beginning of Fall is probably my favourite. With Fall arriving I really wanted to add some decorative touches to our homewithout spending a whole lot. I knew purchasing ready made decor was out of the question this year so I had to get a little creative.
Keeping with the Farmhouse theme in our home, I really wanted white pumpkins. Oh do I love a white pumpkin. I stopped in at both Dollarama and Dollar Tree and scoured the aisles for white pumpkins but there were none to be found. I picked up whatever they had for orange ones, however, and made it into a quick and easy craft project! (Ok, who am I kidding? I have an infant and a 5 year old, nothing is quick and easy!)
Styrofoam and/or Plastic Pumpkins from your local dollar store
Black Acrylic Paint
First I painted the 3 bright orange foam pumpkins from Dollar Tree with my foam brush. I took my handy dandy white chalk paint and started layering on the paint. I’d paint one half and let that dry, then the other half and so on. The foam really absorbs the paint so all in all I believe there were 4 coats applied total.
Once the white was dried, I took my black acrylic paint and a fine detailing paint brush and painted the stems. And voila! $1.25 each for 3 white pumpkins!
I repeated the same steps for the small plastic pumpkins and gourds I purchased from Dollarama that I planned to use as a bowl filler. Not bad for $2.00! I really liked the way they turned out.
