Growing up I had pretty crooked teeth and got teased relentlessly. Kids called me ‘Bucky’. It sucked. I needed braces for most of High School as well as several surgeries to relieve the overcrowding of teeth in my mouth. It was all well worth it, of course, and I find it funny that today my smile is what gets me the most compliments. Perfect strangers have approached me while out in public to tell me how nice and straight my teeth are and ask me how I keep them so white (Kind of awkward, but still very nice to hear). My own dentist even asked what my secret was to my white teeth. I required a crown on one of my teeth and she struggled to find a match that was white enough.
I admit that earlier during my adult life I have used Crest White Strips from time to time which worked extremely well. At times, though, I found my teeth would be sensitive afterwards and I also found them to be expensive. I needed a better solution that was affordable and didn’t leave me with sensitive teeth.
That`s when a few years ago I stumbled upon Oil Pulling. Oil Pulling is the process of swishing Coconut Oil in your mouth for 20 minutes, pulling the oil through your teeth. It`s actually an ancient Ayurvedic practice that has been around for thousands of years.
Coconut Oil has tons of health benefits like antibacterial and antifungal properties. The theory is that while pulling the oil through your teeth, the Coconut Oil lifts and lossens stains as well as draws toxins out of your body. While swishing, the oil will liquify and saliva will collect in your mouth. DO NOT SWALLOW IT. If it is true and the toxins are in there, you don`t want to swallow them.
There are several health benefits to this technique:
*Improved Oral Health (Gingivitis and bad breath)
*Possibly improved overall body health and immune system
*It is said to relieve the pain of headaches
*Can help to clarify acne
*Clears the Sinuses
**There are tons of other reported health benefits to Oil Pulling. I’m not claiming to be a medical professional. I do notice improvements in my skin, oral health and sinuses though!
How to Oil Pull in 3 Easy Steps
STEP 1: Take a Tablespoon of Coconut Oil (other oils like sunflower or sesame are ok too!) and put it in your mouth. Do not swallow.
STEP 2: Begin to swish. Push and pull the oil through your teeth for 20 minutes. You might be like me and think, how am I supposed to find 20 minutes where a small child isn`t asking me a hundred questions? I used to oil pull when I was getting ready for work in the morning and everyone else was sleeping. Now that I’m on Maternity Leave from work, I find the shower is a good place to do it!
Step 3: Once you have completed the 20 minutes of swishing, spit the oil into the trash. If you spit into the sink, the oil could re-solidify and wreak havoc on your pipes. Brush your teeth as usual.
You should notice the whitening effects instantly and the other health benefits over time with consistency. It really is an easy and effective method to getting whiter teeth! Even with the amount of coffee and tea I drink.
I use Skinny and Co. 100% Raw Oil Pulling Peppermint Coconut Oil. (affiliate link) and I absolutely love it! You can purchase it in a kit that comes with a lip balm and Bamboo spoon! You can use regular coconut oil (affiliate link) as well and it does the trick!
