For as long as I can remember, I’ve always been a “wow, look at the moon!” type of person. So it’s no surprise that my daughter is the same way. She enjoys searching for it in the sky and pointing it out to us but gets rather disappointed when she can’t find it. If it’s a clear night and no moon in sight, it usually means it’s a New Moon! In Astronomy, a New Moon is the first phase of the Lunar Cycle when the sun and the moon are at the same ecliptic longitude. During this phase, the moon sits directly between the Sun and Earth. The Sun shines it’s rays on the side of the moon opposite Earth, leaving the side facing us on Earth dark and therefore not visible to the naked eye.
New Moon, Who ‘Dis?
From a spiritual standpoint, in general a New Moon is always the time for fresh starts and setting new intentions. It’s a perfect opportunity to start new projects or create new goals for yourself. It’s a time to stop negative thinking patterns and look at situations with fresh eyes. The intentions you set during this phase will grow with the moon.
My daughter and I love to do New Moon rituals together which is so much fun! Here are 5 New Moon rituals you can do with your kids:
Cleanse Your Crystals in the Moonlight – This is Olivia’s absolute favourite. We lay all of our crystals on the window sill to be cleansed of negative energy absorbed during the last moon phase. The crystals will be energized with the energy of the New Moon and ready to use.
Write Out Your Intentions – Either in a journal or on a piece of paper. Read your list regularly until the next full moon. I like to write them in a journal and leave the journal on the window sill during the New or Full Moon phase. I always give thanks to the Universe 3 times at the end of my list as 3 is a divine number. Some people burn their list on the next Full Moon but the choice is yours. I don’t involve Olivia in this one as much because her intentions are usually things like “get more Shopkins”. We`re working on that…
Write New Moon Checks – This is a fun activity to manifest abundance into your life using the energy of the New Moon! Create them within 24 hours of the New Moon and leave them in the moonlight. Thegoddesscircle.net. offers a free download or you can make them yourself like me.
Be Grateful – Reflect on the last moon cycle and write down all of the things that you’re thankful to the Universe for, either on a piece of paper or in your Gratitude Journal. Again, I like to say Thank You 3 times. For example: “Thank you, thank you, thank you for my daughter having a great first day of Kindergarten.”
Smudge it Out – Adult Supervision required! Light some white sage with the intention of clearing negative energy in your home. You may wish to repeat a mantra or blessing during this process. It`s best to light the sage in an abalone shell and fan the smoke with a feather.
If this New Moon`s energy is getting you down, I hope these rituals will help you through it. Above all Just remember, it`s only a phase…
Mark your calendar! Here are the New Moon dates for 2018:
